William Treadaway Obituary

William Paul Treadaway, M/SGT Ret

William Paul Treadaway, a resident of Dothan, AL, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the age of 92.

He was born March 31, 1932, and lived in Dale County before moving to Dothan, AL in 1978.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, 11 a.m. at Family First Funeral Care Chapel with Chaplain Joey Hudspeth officiating.  Burial will follow in Newton City Cemetery, Newton, AL with Military Honors and Masonic Rites. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.

Born into a sharecropper family, Paul worked in the peanut and cotton fields as a young boy using a plow and mule to tend the fields.  He attended Dale County High School and from there enlisted in the Army National Guard in July 1949.  He subsequently served in the Korean War from January 16, 1951 to October 13, 1952.  He served in the Army National Guard until his retirement, in February 1992, as a Master Sergeant.

He began work at Ft. Rucker, AL in August 1944, conducting examination of driver applicants for Ft. Rucker. Instilled in him from his upbringing, he had a very strong work ethic and worked diligently at advancing his career with both the Military and Federal Civil Service throughout the years.  He rose through the ranks, retiring as a GM-13 as Chief, Supply and Services Division with 42 years of service and Master Sergeant in the National Guard.  He received numerous awards and commendations during his years of service.

He was a people person who never met a stranger and enjoyed being involved in the community.  He joined the Newton Masonic Lodge No. 224 in January 1965 and was still a member at his death.  He served as Master Mason and District Lecture many times and held numerous other positions over his decades of membership.  He joined the York Rites of Dothan in 1983 and was President of the Newton Ruritan Club.

He never lost his passion for farming and always had a garden, for as long as he was able.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents Kary W. Treadaway and Nettie Bera Bell Treadaway; his brother Bernice Cary Treadaway and sister-in-law Loretta, and sister, Betty Beasley.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janice Long Treadaway, son Jeff and step-children Chris and Angela.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the entire staff of Westside Terrace for their loving care of Paul while he was there.  A special thanks to Phillis, Phillip, Shetera and Juanita.
