Jo Darnell, age 66 of Dothan died Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at her residence following a sudden illness.

Funeral services for Jo will be held at 3PM Friday, March 22, 2019 in the Chapel of the Angels at Family First Funeral & Cremation Care with Chaplain Tim Mayhall officiating and Family First Funeral & Cremation Care directing. The family will receive friends beginning at 2PM until service time. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Southeast Health Foundation, P.O. Box 6987, Dothan, AL 36302.

Jo was born June 19, 1952 in Greenville, Alabama to the late Jake and Laurena Croom Ward. She attended the University of Alabama before graduating from Auburn University Montgomery with her Bachelors and later her Masters in Education from Mercer University. For over 25 years, Jo was a teacher at Burdell Elementary School in Macon, Georgia before her retirement. She enjoyed beading and Alabama football and watched every possible game. Many things could be said, but Jo had a very generous heart and a very appreciative attitude and she loved her family.

In addition to her parents, Jo is preceded in death by her husband, Pierce Darnell. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Kara Calix of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Gayle Hart of Dothan; a nephew, Joseph (Heidi) Hart of Maplewood, NJ and two great nephews, Carter and Gibson Hart of Maplewood, NJ. Also, a special four-legged companion, her grand cat, Tyrion.
