George Milton Baxley

George M. Baxley, 91, of Slocomb, Alabama, went to his heavenly resting place Thursday, June 15, 2023 after a brief stay at Southeast Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama. 

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Slocomb, Alabama.  Burial will follow beside his mother and one of his sisters, Nora Edgerton, at the cemetery in Noma, Florida.  Reverend Brad Price and William (Duane) Baxley will officiate.

George was born October 31, 1931 and lived in Slocomb, Alabama most of his life. He worked at Van Heusen Shirt Factory in Hartford, Alabama, then retired from Sony Corporation in Dothan, Alabama and remained active after retirement helping friends and neighbors with lawn maintenance. 

George was a faithful, long-time member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Slocomb. He was married to Mattie Bradshaw Baxley for 43 years and had very close relationships with his sisters, nieces and nephews.  He also was a Mason and enjoyed making friends and attending the Slocomb Senior Center in his later years for fun-hearted conversation and activities. 

George is survived by his niece Phyllis Vaughn-Gadd who was his loving Guardian later in life and her husband Chris Gadd, his niece Daisy Wilkerson and nephew Duane Baxley who also helped with his care and well-being along with nieces Lenora Quimby, Renee Starrett, Martha Snyder; and Myra Atwell and nephews Billy Murphy, Tommy Baxley, Greg Baxley, Dennis Register, Pat Baxley and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Nena (Tye) Baxley and William (Willie) Baxley, sisters, Nora (Baxley) Edgerton, Flora Register, Juanita Cruce, Margaret Murphy and Bertha Mae Register; brothers J.B. Baxley, Lloyd Baxley, Harold Baxley; nephews Michael Cruce, Howell Baxley, James L. Baxley, Tim Register, Kenneth Register, Billy Gene and Edward Baxley; nieces Linda Clayton and Yvonne Carswell.

George was well cared for late in life by caretakers, Muriel Whitehead, Sara Hall, Queen McClain and Melanie Murray.

His best companions especially later in life were his cats Pumpkin, Susie and Granny; dogs Lady and Buck.

Flowers are appreciated but donations can also be made in his name to a small-town animal shelter or East Geneva County Senior Citizens Center at 220 East Lawrence Harris Hwy Slocomb, Alabama 36375.  Arrangements are entrusted to Family First Funeral Care of Dothan.
