Janette Galloway Formby

Janette Galloway Formby passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Westside Terrace Nursing Home in Dothan, Alabama. She was 103 years old.

A family and friends graveside service will be held at the Hartford, Alabama city cemetery on Monday, July 31, 2023, 11 a.m. 

Janette was born on March18, 1920 to Henry Irvin and Vassie Register Galloway. She was raised on the family farm between Hartford and Geneva until enlisting in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in 1943 during World War II. Although she never served on a ship or overseas, she and many other WAVES expertly performed their clerical duties, thus releasing the men who would typically do the work for active duty. Her

family is very proud of her service to our country which continued until 1946. 

Janette raised two children and worked as a bookkeeper at Rhodes Furniture Company the years she lived in Dothan. When her children went to college, she moved to Montgomery in 1972 to work with the Veterans Administration. She also cared for her mother through the years. She loved her family and although she was not really fond of cooking, she never let her children leave home in the morning without a hot breakfast. At Thanksgiving she baked the best cornbread dressing with chicken that you have ever tasted.

Janette was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Hilda G. Latimer.

She is survived by her children, Janet F. Ellison (Dave) of Sandestin, FL and Dewey Formby (Martha) of Dothan; grandchildren Wendi E. Henson (Todd) of Austin, TX and Aimee F. Greene (Patrick) of Auburn, AL; great grandchildren Tyler Broden and Ava Greene; beloved nephew Rusty Latimer and family of Loveland, CO.

The family sincerely thanks the staffs of Westside Terrace Nursing Home and Azalea Court Assisted Living (Headland) for their excellent care.
