Russell Sommer Obituary

Russell  Glen Sommer

Russell Glen Sommer, 58, passed away at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, AL, on Thursday, October 21, 2021, and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus, whom he loved and trusted. Born on December 28, 1962, Russ was the son of Tom and Linda Sommer.

He spent most of his youth in the Atlanta area, living mainly in Sandy Springs, attending Landmark Church in Norcross, and graduating from North Springs High School in 1981.  Since earning his Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1986, Russ has worked in various roles for a number of companies, including 17 years at Macy’s corporate offices where he served as a project manager.

A singer and guitarist, Russ loved music.  In addition to his role as lead vocalist for The Decades, Russ has sung for weddings, retirement homes, and Christian ministries over the years.   From car repairs to home improvement, tech support, and general running of errands, Russ has happily lent a hand to those in need. He has always been known as a guy who could fix anything and was adored by the countless people who experienced his kindness and helpfulness as well as his musical talent.

Russ grew up in a tight-knit family who loved to travel. On a tour of China one year, he and his siblings gained the title “The Three Happy Brothers.”  How they loved to laugh and reminisce throughout his life.  He served on the board of Voice of the Sword, a ministry led by his mother, Linda Sommer, and devoted to the building of God’s kingdom.

Preceded in death by his father, Tom Sommer, Russ is survived by his children, Tyler and Savannah of Alpharetta, GA; his mother, Linda, of Dothan, AL; his brothers, Ron (Mary Virginia and children: Paola, Julie, Ronnie, Ruthie, and Gemma) of Dothan, AL, and Ray (Teri and children: Sofi and Nate) of Monroe, GA; his aunts, Kathleen Massey and Lavilla Walker (Lyn); his uncle, Bob Vanderhorn; his “Russian brother,” Vladimir Shlyakhov, and “Chinese sister,” Christina Feng; several beloved cousins.
